Observation of the Charge Symmetry Breaking d + d -> 4He + pi0 Reaction Near Threshold
We report the first observation of the charge symmetry breaking d + d -> 4He
+ pi0 reaction near threshold at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility.
Kinematic reconstruction permitted the separation of 4He + pi0 events from
double radiative capture 4He + gamma + gamma events. We measured total cross
sections for neutron pion production of 12.7 +- 2.2 pb at 228.5 MeV and 15.1 +-
3.1 pb at 231.8 MeV. The uncertainty is dominated by statistical errors.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, plain Te
Supernova Simulations and Strategies For the Dark Energy Survey
We present an analysis of supernova light curves simulated for the upcoming
Dark Energy Survey (DES) supernova search. The simulations employ a code suite
that generates and fits realistic light curves in order to obtain distance
modulus/redshift pairs that are passed to a cosmology fitter. We investigated
several different survey strategies including field selection, supernova
selection biases, and photometric redshift measurements. Using the results of
this study, we chose a 30 square degree search area in the griz filter set. We
forecast 1) that this survey will provide a homogeneous sample of up to 4000
Type Ia supernovae in the redshift range 0.05<z<1.2, and 2) that the increased
red efficiency of the DES camera will significantly improve high-redshift color
measurements. The redshift of each supernova with an identified host galaxy
will be obtained from spectroscopic observations of the host. A supernova
spectrum will be obtained for a subset of the sample, which will be utilized
for control studies. In addition, we have investigated the use of combined
photometric redshifts taking into account data from both the host and
supernova. We have investigated and estimated the likely contamination from
core-collapse supernovae based on photometric identification, and have found
that a Type Ia supernova sample purity of up to 98% is obtainable given
specific assumptions. Furthermore, we present systematic uncertainties due to
sample purity, photometric calibration, dust extinction priors, filter-centroid
shifts, and inter-calibration. We conclude by estimating the uncertainty on the
cosmological parameters that will be measured from the DES supernova data.Comment: 46 pages, 30 figures, resubmitted to ApJ as Revision 2 (final author

Measurement of Inverse Pion Photoproduction at Energies Spanning the N(1440) Resonance
Differential cross sections for the process pi^- p -> gamma n have been
measured at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron
with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer. Measurements were made at 18
pion momenta from 238 to 748 MeV/c, corresponding to E_gamma for the inverse
reaction from 285 to 769 MeV. The data have been used to evaluate the gamma n
multipoles in the vicinity of the N(1440) resonance. We compare our data and
multipoles to previous determinations. A new three-parameter SAID fit yields 36
+/- 7 (GeV)^-1/2 X 10^-3 for the A^n_1/2 amplitude of the P_11.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PR
A novel method for the absolute fluorescence yield measurement by AIRFLY
One of the goals of the AIRFLY (AIR FLuorescence Yield) experiment is to
measure the absolute fluorescence yield induced by electrons in air to better
than 10% precision. We introduce a new technique for measurement of the
absolute fluorescence yield of the 337 nm line that has the advantage of
reducing the systematic uncertainty due to the detector calibration. The
principle is to compare the measured fluorescence yield to a well known process
- the Cerenkov emission. Preliminary measurements taken in the BFT (Beam Test
Facility) in Frascati, Italy with 350 MeV electrons are presented. Beam tests
in the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator at the Argonne National Laboratory, USA
with 14 MeV electrons have also shown that this technique can be applied at

Temperature and Humidity Dependence of Air Fluorescence Yield measured by AIRFLY
The fluorescence detection of ultra high energy cosmic rays requires a
detailed knowledge of the fluorescence light emission from nitrogen molecules
over a wide range of atmospheric parameters, corresponding to altitudes typical
of the cosmic ray shower development in the atmosphere. We have studied the
temperature and humidity dependence of the fluorescence light spectrum excited
by MeV electrons in air. Results for the 313.6 nm, 337.1 nm, 353.7 nm and 391.4
nm bands are reported in this paper. We found that the temperature and humidity
dependence of the quenching process changes the fluorescence yield by a
sizeable amount (up to 20%) and its effect must be included for a precise
estimation of the energy of ultra high energy cosmic rays.Comment: presented at the 5th Fluorescence Workshop, El Escorial - Madrid,
